Center for STEM Education

For more than a decade, Intermediate Unit 1’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Center has fostered a dynamic partnership between local school districts, institutions of higher education, and the foundation community. We continue to roll-out best practice K–12 STEM programs, and we are committed to providing graduate level courses for educators, implementing research based curricula, and offering summer camps for students.

What is STEM?

STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real world lessons. Students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and global enterprise.

Our STEM Programs

Innovation and Design

Through continued partnerships with higher education, the STEM Center provides educators with workshops, instructional resources, and professional development on creating unique and innovative classes.

Fab Lab

The IU1 Fab Lab and Mobile Fab Lab are technical platforms for STEM education, workforce development, and business idea prototyping. The IU1 Fab Labs allow students to explore the entire design process in authentic and real world contexts.

Robotics

The IU1 robotics programs are an important component of IU1 summer camps and student workshops.

Science Matters

This hands-on science program provides schools with the resources to deliver challenging science curricula in a problem-solving environment. Services include module training, module refurbishing, curriculum mapping, module rental, and technical assistance.

Mathematics

The Center for STEM Education is uniquely positioned to support mathematics education in your school or district through curriculum planning and consulting, instructional coaching, support of Pennsylvania Department of Education initiatives, and content development courses.

What Teachers Are Saying

It has been more than 15 years since I graduated college. Since that time I have drifted away from learning new things, until this course. I am renewed as far as technology is concerned. Thank you.

Robotics Teacher

This course made me think differently about numbers and helped me better understand how children feel as they are learning these concepts for the first time.

Elementary Math Teacher

The students have been phenomenal! The introduction of the first class in the IU1 Fab Lab has been a success that we hope will expand to not only the other students at Colonial, but other district students as well.
