Adult, Nonpublic, and English as a Second Language Education Services

The IU1 Adult, Nonpublic and English as a Second Language Education Services department provides a wide-ranging array of services for non-traditional students.

Adult Education Services

The Adult Basic Education program supports 26 basic and literacy education classes throughout the tri-county area serving nearly 800 adults each year. In addition, over 300 adults are given the opportunity to earn the General Education Development (GED) diploma through the Intermediate Unit 1 GED Testing Centers.

The program is operated through funding by the Bureau of Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) at the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).

Nonpublic Education Services

IU1 offers programs to students in nonpublic schools within the geographical boundaries of Fayette, Greene and Washington Counties. Eligible students are Pennsylvania resident students enrolled in and attending full-time in Pennsylvania non-profit nonpublic schools that have submitted the PDE Affirmation of Eligibility of Students to the Division of Nonpublic, Private and Charter School Services.

English as a Second Language Services

Intermediate Unit 1 provides English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to students in the twenty-five school districts in Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. English as a Second Language instruction is a part of the student’s curriculum.

All Intermediate Unit 1 teachers hold an ESL certificate or are in the process of obtaining one. Our teachers provide individualized or small group instruction to the students. The students’ first languages are varied: seventeen different languages are represented in the program.
