Educational Programs

The IU1 Adult, Nonpublic and English as a Second Language Education Services department provides a wide-ranging array of services for non-traditional students.

Adult Basic Education and Career Readiness

The Adult Basic Education program supports 21 adult basic and literacy education classes throughout a four-county area serving nearly 625 adults each year. Our classes help students improve their reading, writing, and math skills in order to pass the GED® or HiSET® tests, gain or improve employment or transition to postsecondary schools. Intermediate Unit 1 is a HiSET®  Testing Center and provides HiSET® testing once a month in Greene County.

The program is operated through funding by the Division of Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) at the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).

Nonpublic Education Services

IU1 offers programs to students in nonpublic schools within the geographical boundaries of Fayette, Greene and Washington Counties. Eligible students are Pennsylvania resident students enrolled in and attending full-time in Pennsylvania non-profit nonpublic schools that have submitted the PDE Affirmation of Eligibility of Students to the Division of Nonpublic, Private and Charter School Services.

English as a Second Language Services

Intermediate Unit 1 provides English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to students in the twenty-five school districts in Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. English as a Second Language instruction is a part of the student’s curriculum.

All Intermediate Unit 1 teachers hold an ESL Program Specialist Certification. Our teachers provide individualized or small group instruction to the students. The students’ first languages are varied and represent a wide variety of different languages from around the world.
