Educational Programs
The IU1 Adult, Nonpublic and English as a Second Language Education Services department provides a wide-ranging array of services for non-traditional students.
Adult Basic Education
The Adult Basic Education program supports adult basic education classes throughout a four-county area serving nearly 500 adults each year. Our classes help students improve their reading, writing, and math skills in order to pass the GED® or HiSET® tests, gain or improve employment or transition to postsecondary schools.
The program is operated through funding by the Division of Adult Basic Education at the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).
Nonpublic Education Services
IU1 offers Act 89 Auxiliary Services to students in nonpublic schools within the geographical boundaries of Fayette, Greene and Washington Counties. Eligible Act 89 students are Pennsylvania resident students enrolled in and attending full-time in Pennsylvania non-profit nonpublic schools that have submitted the PDE Affirmation of Eligibility of Students to the Division of Nonpublic, Private and Charter School Services. IU1 coordinates state Act 89 auxiliary programs alongside federal Title programs—including Title I (academic support), Title II (secular professional development), Title III (English language acquisition & Title III Consortium), and Title IV (student support & academic enrichment)—to deliver targeted instructional, diagnostic, and technical services.
English as a Second Language Services
Intermediate Unit 1 provides English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to students in the 25 school districts in Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties. ESL instruction is an integral part of the student's curriculum, and all IU1 teachers hold an ESL Program Specialist Certification to deliver individualized or small-group support to a diverse, multilingual student population.
Additionally, IU1 leads a regional Title III Consortium, allowing participating school districts to pool resources for supplemental ELD materials, family engagement, technical assistance, and specialized professional development.
