IU1 Hosts Annual Student Showcase and Regional Convention

Teachers viewing a student project during the showcase

On March 24, 2025, the PennWest California Convocation Center served as a hub of inspiration as Intermediate Unit 1 (IU1) hosted its annual Student Showcase, followed by the IU1 Regional Convention. The day-long event celebrated the remarkable achievements of students and the dedicated leadership of educators from across Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties.

The afternoon kicked off with the Student Showcase, where the gymnasium was transformed into a gallery of modern education. Students from elementary through high school levels presented projects that moved beyond traditional boundaries, featuring a wide variety of hands-on learning. While the specific displays change every year, past and present highlights include:

  • Advanced Technology: Drone flight demonstrations, robotics, and student-led podcasting sessions.
  • Creative Craftsmanship: Intricate woodworking, diverse STEM projects, and professional-grade artwork.
  • Digital Fabrication: Live looks at 3D printing and laser-cut designs from the IU1 FabLab.

These displays represent the unique strengths and innovative programs found within our 25 school districts. All the while, music from various groups carried throughout the center; jazz ensembles, violinists, and steel drum bands provided a vibrant soundtrack to the day's innovation.

Following the showcase, the focus shifted to the IU1 Regional Convention and dinner. This gathering brought together district leaders, superintendents, and school board members to recognize the tireless work of those who steer our regional educational initiatives.

In addition to the evening’s recognitions, the annual IU1 Board Election was held during the course of the event. The results were finalized and winners officially announced during the dinner program, marking a key moment of leadership transition for the year ahead.

The highlight of the evening was a keynote address by Mrs. Maddie Loring, a fourth-grade teacher at Jefferson-Morgan Elementary School and the 2026 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Loring shared her personal journey to the state title, emphasizing the importance of being "unapologetically yourself" in the classroom. Her message, which she is currently spreading across the Commonwealth, focuses on the power of authenticity and her mission to champion the teaching profession.

IU1 extends its gratitude to PennWest California, the participating district bands, and all the attendees who came out to celebrate the future of education in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
