Adult Basic Education and Career Readiness
Intermediate Unit 1 offers a variety of adult instructional programs throughout Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Adult education programs reach a cross-segment of adults from a variety of backgrounds. In general, our students study basic skills in order to
- Obtain a high school equivalency credential (GED or HiSET)
- Pass an entrance or skills exam that will lead to post-secondary training.
- Gain or maintain employment that requires a review of general knowledge or specific skills.
- Improve English as a Second Language Skills for post-secondary schooling or employment.
Our teachers and coordinators realize that our students come to us from different walks of life. Therefore, it is our mission to create a comprehensive educational experience that is specifically tailored towards individualized career goals.
Our program partners with the Literacy Council of Southwestern PA, Westmoreland Library Network and Pennsylvania CareerLink Centers in each corresponding county. Funding for these classes is provided by the Adult Basic Education Direct Service Grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
