Early Intervention

The Early Intervention Program provides specialized instruction for eligible young children ages three through the age of beginners who reside in one of the 25 school districts served by the Intermediate Unit 1. Related Services are available in the areas of speech, hearing, vision, orientation and mobility, physical therapy and occupational therapy.

Early Intervention supports and services are provided when the child demonstrates a need for specially designed instruction and meets the eligibility criteria of a 25% delay in one or more of the five developmental areas or has a school age diagnosis.  The primary goal of the program is to improve a child’s developmental skills to best prepare him or her for school age programming. The staff works closely with school districts and families to facilitate the transition to kindergarten for eligible children. A language-based curriculum with developmentally appropriate activities provides a framework for learning. Services are provided to children in their least restrictive environment through embedding skills and instruction within everyday routines.
