Washington School District

Washington High School is a place where students are actively engaged in learning, career preparation, and hands-on experiences. The hallways were filled with movement and conversation, even more so with a college and career fair taking place that day, giving students the opportunity to explore future paths. The school’s commitment to innovation and student success is evident in its programs, technology, and resources designed to prepare students for life beyond high school.

Technology plays a key role in the classroom, with VR headsets being used in math lessons. Students complete a two-part task, finishing with an interactive activity that reinforces the lesson. Beyond academics, the school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program focuses on recognizing positive behaviors and achievements, leading to improvements in attendance, academic performance, and student engagement. The Prexie Center, a welcoming media hub, stays open after school, providing students with a space to study, collaborate, and unwind.

Real-world learning extends into career and life skills programs. The high school life skills class runs a coffee delivery service, giving students hands-on experience in managing money, paying bills, and handling unexpected fines. The PAES Lab (Practical Assessment Exploration System) further enhances independence by teaching students skills like sewing, cooking, cleaning, and financial literacy. Through the PAES store, students can spend the money they earn, reinforcing the value of responsibility and budgeting.

A standout resource at Washington High School is the Heyward House, a place of support and generosity for students in need. Within it, Craig’s Closet provides free professional and casual clothing to male students who may not have access to appropriate attire for interviews, internships, or even daily wear. The initiative was founded in honor of Craig DeShields, a Wash High alumnus who recognized the importance of dressing for success and wanted to ensure that young men had the confidence and resources to put their best foot forward. Inspired by his legacy, Craig’s Closet continues to make a lasting impact, helping students feel prepared and self-assured for any opportunity that comes their way. The Heyward House extends this mission beyond Craig’s Closet, offering a similar program for female students within the high school. This space ensures that all students, regardless of circumstance, have access to the clothing they need, whether for special events, career-related occasions, or everyday wear. More than just providing clothing, the Heyward House fosters a sense of community and support, reinforcing the school’s dedication to student success in all aspects of life.

Washington High School is dedicated to fostering academic success, personal growth, and career readiness. Whether through cutting-edge technology, hands-on career training, or programs that support students’ well-being, the school ensures every student is prepared for the future. By removing barriers and equipping students with the skills and confidence they need, Wash High continues to empower its students to take on whatever comes next.
