From welding stations to woodworking areas, classrooms and shops have been shaped by the very hands learning the trades. This philosophy is even reflected in the physical spaces—classrooms for programs like carpentry, electrical construction, and building trades don’t have stools because in these fields, professionals are constantly on their feet, problem-solving in real time. That same energy carries over to the automotive programs, where everything from technology and collision repair to detailing and paint correction overlaps, ensuring that students graduate with a deep understanding of the entire industry.

Students training in construction and skilled trades gain real-world experience through large-scale projects, often contributing to the infrastructure of the school itself. Mon Valley CTC also offers a wide variety of other specialized programs to equip students with in-demand skills. In the Computer Engineering program, students learn about computer systems, networking, and cybersecurity, preparing them for careers in IT. The Cosmetology program focuses on hair styling, skincare, and nail technology, giving students the skills needed to excel in the beauty industry. The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program trains students to become emergency medical technicians, providing them with essential skills to respond to medical emergencies. The Health Occupations program prepares students for careers in healthcare, covering patient care and medical terminology.

For those interested in the technical world of heating and cooling, the HVAC-R program teaches installation and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. One of the newest and most exciting additions to Mon Valley CTC is the Veterinary Science program, which launched in the 2024-25 school year. A three-year track designed to prepare students to become veterinary assistants, it covers essential topics such as breed knowledge, pharmacology, anatomy, medical terminology, and client communication. The classroom is brought to life with the presence of two Australian Cattle Dogs, who serve as hands-on learning companions for restraint techniques, heart rate monitoring, and overall animal care. Students in the mechanized agriculture program take a different approach to hands-on learning, working with advanced machinery and equipment to improve efficiency in modern farming practices, covering everything from land preparation to harvesting.

Welding and metal fabrication students master various techniques while building many of the stations they use daily, reinforcing the idea that their skills are shaping real-world projects. The same level of technical expertise is found in the robotics and engineering programs, where students put months of work into designing, programming, and testing their creations before taking them to competition. The BotsIQ team recently competed at the Keystone Oaks Vex High Stakes Competition, where they were tasked with engineering a robot to collect and sort plastic rings for points. These competitions challenge students to think critically, adapt quickly, and refine their problem-solving abilities under pressure.

Beyond individual skill-building, Mon Valley CTC fosters collaboration across disciplines. Construction students work alongside electrical students on real builds, while automotive students detail projects engineered by welding classes. This interconnected approach not only enhances technical learning but also teaches teamwork and adaptability—traits that will serve students well no matter where their careers take them.
