At Laurel Highlands High School, the district’s dedication to sustainability is evident in its aquaponics system, part of the agriculture curriculum. Acquired through the PA Smart Advancing grant, this INTAG system combines aquaponics and hydroponics technologies, where plants and fish coexist in a self-sustaining ecosystem. In this system, fish waste provides nutrients for the plants, while plants help filter the water, which is then recirculated back to the fish tanks. This hands-on learning device offers students a glimpse into sustainable food production while supporting STEM education. Science classes use the aquaponics system for regular water testing, while life skills students contribute by feeding the fish and even selling some of the plants. Plans are underway to establish a full-sized greenhouse in the high school courtyard by 2025, also funded through a grant, further reinforcing the district's commitment to environmental stewardship and agricultural education.
Additionally, the high school has partnered with the Rural Arts Collaborative (RAC), the Hillman Foundation, and the Fayette County Cultural Trust to create unique opportunities in arts education. Through the “Art & Aging: Seniors, Students, and Synergy” project, Laurel Highlands was one of two schools in the county to implement a new art initiative connecting students with senior citizens. As part of the Honors Advanced Art/Art Therapy course, students visited Monarch Meadow Personal Care Home weekly, where they collaborated with an artist to explore various art forms, including painting, music, and dance. This program, with all artist fees, transportation, and art supplies covered by Hillman funds, culminated in an exhibit, offering a beautiful, intergenerational exchange of ideas and creativity that fostered connection and understanding.
The high school also embraced the growing field of esports, establishing a program supported by grant-funded equipment. Through this initiative, students gain valuable skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, and digital literacy. The esports program fosters inclusivity and provides a platform for students to engage in a dynamic, competitive environment that prepares them for the digital age.
In the middle school, the district leveraged the PA Smart Advancing grant to acquire a classroom-sized inflatable planetarium, enhancing science lessons with an immersive exploration of Earth and space. The planetarium allows students to experience a hands-on, visually engaging journey through the solar system and beyond, expanding their understanding of scale and the universe’s vastness. Additionally, the middle school staff received the Ignite the Classroom scholarship to attend the renowned Ron Clark Academy (RCA) in Atlanta, Georgia. Nine educators participated in national workshops and classroom observations from July 7th to July 9th, bringing back inspiring and innovative teaching strategies. Upon returning, the middle school team implemented key RCA strategies such as motivational music to start and end class, the “Best Day Ever” theme to engage students, and the creation of “Teacher Houses” to promote school spirit and camaraderie.
The district also goes above and beyond in supporting students with special needs. Elementary students with autism and other intellectual disabilities participated in a monthly bowling league at Manor Lanes in Hopwood, PA. This event, held on October 25th, allowed students to enjoy a day of bowling in a supportive and accessible environment. With the collaboration of compassionate teachers and a welcoming local bowling alley, students practiced functional life skills, socialized with peers, and engaged in a sport that they can enjoy for life. This program highlights the district’s commitment to inclusive, enjoyable activities that build students' confidence and help them develop leisure skills.
