On Friday, January 3rd, IU1 staff, along with colleagues from Frazier and Charleroi School Districts, gathered at Charleroi High School for the second annual Health and Wellness In-Service. This event was thoughtfully designed to give educators and staff a chance to rest, recharge, and refocus as they head into the second half of the school year. With a mix of inspiring presentations, engaging breakout sessions, and practical resources, the day provided a holistic approach to prioritizing well-being.
The morning began with a warm welcome and opening remarks from IU1 Executive Director Dr. Don Martin, setting a positive tone for the day. The keynote speaker, Gene Steratore, captivated the audience with his insights on wellness. A former NFL and NCAA basketball official, Steratore shared how prioritizing physical, mental, and emotional health was essential throughout his officiating career and remains a cornerstone of his daily life. His message resonated deeply, offering valuable perspectives on integrating wellness into both professional and personal routines.
Following the keynote, attendees participated in a variety of breakout sessions tailored to diverse interests and needs. Topics ranged from practical strategies for self-care and financial wellness to more active sessions like restorative yoga and even an introduction to sword fighting. Meanwhile, a vendor fair in the gymnasium showcased over 30 exhibitors, providing resources on fitness centers, health insurance options, emergency medical services, blood pressure screenings, retirement planning, and more.
The day concluded on an exciting note with a raffle featuring prizes such as a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey, a free massage, and Visa gift cards. This year’s Health and Wellness In-Service was a tremendous success, fostering a sense of community and renewal among attendees. With plans already underway for next year, the event is set to grow even bigger and better, continuing to support the well-being of IU1 and district staff.
