On December 4th, IU1 Waynesburg campus had the pleasure of hosting Coalbie, Greene County Juvenile Court’s therapy dog and the heart of Growing Up Greene's Pup Program. This nonprofit children’s advocacy organization launched the pilot program to help curb childhood trauma through the comfort and connection Coalbie provides.

Coalbie, handled by Arron Houser, executive director of Growing Up Greene, has a unique story that makes her mission even more impactful. A former foster puppy, Coalbie understands the challenges children face, from court hearings to emotional stress, and her story of resilience inspires children to embrace coping skills, compassion, and hope.

During her visit, Coalbie melted hearts with her gentle presence. Students beamed with joy as they received Coalbie kisses, rubbed her belly, and laid down beside her. The therapeutic energy in the room was palpable, as Coalbie lifted spirits with every interaction.

Students were full of curiosity, asking questions about Coalbie’s life and work. “How does she help people?” “Does she get baths?” “Who does she stay with?” And perhaps the most touching—“Can she come back?”

Coalbie’s mission is clear: to help children understand and move beyond difficult times. Her ability to connect, comfort, and inspire hope left a lasting impression on everyone at the Waynesburg campus. We look forward to more visits from Coalbie as she continues her journey of healing and advocacy in our community.
