Chartiers-Houston School District

Nestled in the heart of Washington County, the Chartiers-Houston School District serves the communities of Houston Borough and Chartiers Township. With just over 1,200 students across its elementary and junior/senior high schools, the district has built a reputation for academic excellence, personalized learning, and a strong sense of community. Guided by its mission to “inspire all students to achieve their greatest potential,” the district continues to create meaningful learning opportunities that support both academic growth and student engagement. Students are not only engaged in rigorous classroom instruction but are also taking advantage of opportunities to explore their passions through clubs, leadership experiences, and athletics. The district’s Buccaneers, proudly wearing maroon and gold, exemplify both school spirit and a commitment to student success.

One example of the district’s commitment to expanding academic opportunities is the recent reintroduction of College in High School (CHS) Chemistry, made possible through a partnership with the University of Pittsburgh. The course was introduced to provide students with an advanced option beyond traditional high school chemistry. After research, professional training, and conversations with families, the decision was made to pursue the CHS model as an alternative to an Advanced Placement course.

Unlike AP courses, which rely heavily on a single exam at the end of the year to determine college credit, CHS Chemistry allows students to earn credit through consistent performance in labs, tests, and classroom assignments throughout the school year. Students who earn a grade of C or higher through the University of Pittsburgh may be able to transfer those credits to other colleges that accept them. An additional highlight of the course is the opportunity for students to travel to the university’s Chevron Science Center three times each year to participate in hands-on laboratory experiences.

While the course builds on the foundational concepts students learn in first-year chemistry, it approaches the material through deeper critical thinking and application. Students explore advanced topics such as gases and thermochemistry while developing the analytical skills expected in college-level science courses. For those considering careers in fields such as pre-med, pharmacy, engineering, or other science-related disciplines, the course offers a valuable preview of the rigor and expectations of higher education.

The district also continues to invest in innovative learning spaces that support creativity and digital literacy. The recently upgraded Media Lab, sponsored by Printscape, serves as a hub for digital design and student-led content creation. The space provides students with opportunities to develop skills in multimedia production, collaboration, and creative storytelling, further expanding the ways students can express their ideas and share their work.

Creativity and collaboration are also thriving within the district’s music program through the high school’s a cappella ensemble, Buccaneer Beats. The group was founded by the school’s choir teacher after students responded enthusiastically to performing a Pentatonix arrangement during a winter choir concert. Their excitement for the contemporary a cappella style sparked the idea to form a dedicated ensemble. The teacher was also inspired by former choir director Ryan Perrotte and his well-known Room 100 ensemble at Penn-Trafford High School, which demonstrated how impactful and engaging a student a cappella program could be.

The ensemble’s roots began when members of the Concert Choir attended the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Region 1 A Cappella Festival at Penn-Trafford High School in 2024, where they informally performed under the name Buccaneer Beats. Following that experience, auditions were held in the spring of 2025, and the group officially formed as an after-school ensemble. Their debut performance at the Spring 2025 Choir Concert was met with enthusiastic support from the school community.

As interest in the group continued to grow, the program was later approved as a class during the school day. Students now audition to enroll, and the ensemble rehearses daily for a 40-minute class period. The audition process requires students to perform a portion of an assigned piece with their voice part to demonstrate their ability to hold harmonies, blend with the ensemble, and participate in choreography, while also presenting a solo that highlights their individual vocal strengths. The name “Buccaneer Beats” was selected after students brainstormed ideas during choir class, with one suggestion ultimately standing out as the perfect fit.

Recruitment for the group has grown through performances at concerts, pep rallies, and other school events, as well as word of mouth among students. The ensemble is currently preparing for upcoming spring pep rallies and the Spring Choir Concert on April 30. Looking ahead, the group plans to participate in additional regional performances, including the Kettering A Cappella Festival in Ohio and future PMEA regional a cappella concerts. With auditions recently completed for the next school year, Buccaneer Beats is expected to double in size as interest in the program continues to grow.

From advanced academic coursework to creative performance opportunities, the Chartiers-Houston School District offers students a well-rounded educational experience in a supportive and close-knit environment. Its dedication to strong academics, meaningful extracurricular opportunities, and community pride ensures that students are well prepared for future success. For families in Houston Borough and Chartiers Township, the district continues to serve as a place where students can learn, grow, and proudly carry on the Buccaneer tradition.
