Literacy Council of Southwestern PA's Postsecondary Scholarship Program

Congratulations to Madison Anthony, the most recent recipient  of the Literacy Council of Southwestern PA’s Postsecondary Scholarship Program.  The scholarship program is a program for non-traditional students who complete the Intermediate Unit 1 Adult Basic Education and Career Readiness Program and transition to a postsecondary program.  It is funded through a grant from the Washington County Local Share Account Program.

Madison was a student at the IU1 PA CareerLink Washington County class.  She started classes in December 2019 and was working toward her high school equivalency.  She worked diligently in her classes, all the time caring for her mother and three year old son.  Madison was close to finishing her sections on the GED test, and had already started her admission process at Penn Commercial, when all programs went into shut down in March 2020.

Rather than get discouraged, Madison studied from her house, using her cell phone to access study materials.  As soon as testing resumed, she passed her final section of the GED in June 2020.  She started her LPN program at Penn Commercial on July 6, 2020.
