IU1 Mentors

Program Parameters

  1. Serving as a mentor is voluntary.
  2. Mentors will receive a yearly stipend or $750 for each person that is mentored. This stipend will be pro-rated if the mentor completes a partial year (based on start/end date as mentor).
  3. Preferably mentors are limited to one inductee at a time. If group mentoring (i.e., more than one inductee) is necessary, it will remain voluntary for the mentor.
  4. When there are no available bargaining unit members, it may be necessary to employ other qualified IU employees as mentors. In such cases, the administration will first consult with the IUEA.
  5. Mentors will be selected from the same team as the inductee when possible.
  6. The Mentoring and Induction resource materials and all forms will be electronic and posted on the IU1 website.
  7. Mentors will be paid as their year ends (based on mentor assigned date). The mentor requirements are the completion of a one time orientation online, attendance at two mentor/inductee sessions, and the completion of the mentor/induction log and the mentor checklist. The aforementioned documentation, along with a current copy of the mentor's transcript, is to be sent to Marla Kurilko two weeks after the mentor year ends (based on date mentor assigned).
    1. In most cases no substitution of classes is allowed for inductees. The exception would be if an educator who is hired has just completed nonviolent crisis intervention (NCI) or if an educator changes job categories.
    2. Inductees who complete their third year and still have classes to finish will continue to have formal mentoring if their mentor/inductee year three is not completed at the time of the presentation (based on date of mentor assigned).
    3. Inductees who complete their third year and still have classes to make up and their third year mentor/inductee time period has ended will no longer have a formal mentoring relationship (e.g., no mentor payment).
    4. Mentors who retire/resign during a mentor year will receive a prorated payment dependent upon the requirements met and the documentation supplied to Marla Kurilko.
    5. Mentors whose inductees have resigned during a mentor year will receive a prorated payment dependent upon the requirements met and the documentation supplied to Marla Kurilko.
    6. Direct all questions to Mrs. Dennick, Assistant Director of Special Education Services; Mrs. Conrady, Director of Adult, Nonpublic, and ESL Education Services; and Mr. Martin, Assistant Executive Director.

Mentor Requirements

  1. All mentors must complete an online orientation session. The orientation should be completed during the first year of mentoring. The online orientation can be found at http://mentoring.iu1.wikispaces.net. Before beginning the orientation, register on Solutionwhere so that the orientation will appear on your transcript. Mentors must attend two Mentor/Inductee sessions in each of the three years that they are a mentor. In Year 1, mentors should attend the Introduction to Induction session with the inductee. In addition, they should collaborate with the inductee and register for the same fall or winter Mentor/Inductee session as the inductee. In Year 2, mentors and inductees attend two of the three Mentor/Inductee sessions offered. In Year 3, the mentor should collaborate with the inductee and register for the same fall or winter Mentor/Inductee session as the inductee.
  2. Option: Mentors have the opportunity to attend three courses during the three-year mentoring period at no cost to them. These sessions may be face-to-face or online sessions. The following IU1 courses are available. Other courses may be requested by the mentors, which are appropriate to their assignments. Mentors may contact Donald Martin by email with their written request.
    • Online mentoring course
    • Building Your ePortfolio
    • Differentiated Instruction
    • The Reflective Practitioner Parts 1 and 2

CPE courses charge a tuition fee and may charge additional fees for materials. Mentors must notify Marla Kurilko by email if the credit fee for a CPE course is to be waived because of Mentoring.

To have the tuition waved as a mentor:

    1. Register.
    2. Choose “Personal Check” as the payment type.
    3. Email Marla Kurilko stating that you registered and would like the tuition fee waved for Mentoring.
  3. A Compliance Checklist will be completed by the mentor and returned at the end of each year (based on mentor assignment date) to Marla Kurilko. A checklist and log must be completed for each inductee that a mentor has. Once the mentor log, checklist, and current transcript, are submitted and reviewed by Marla Kurilko for completion, a dated copy will be given to payroll for the stipend pay. For each year, a minimum of nine contacts should be recorded on the log (e.g. email, telephone, face-to-face). Additional pages can be added to the log. Logs and checklists are due no later than two weeks after the anniversary of the mentor assignment date (e.g. Mentor assigned 1-3-07, logs due 1-17-08, 1-17-09, and 1-17-10).
  4. Mentors will complete logs yearly. Logs will be sent to Marla Kurilko at the end of each year. The year end is determined by the date the mentor was assigned.
  5. Mentors will receive a certificate for each inductee whom they mentor. The certificate will be issued at the end of the third year (based on mentor assignment date).

Schedule for Mentor and Inductee Meetings

Mentors have the following mandatory activities during the three year mentoring period. Beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, mentors must complete an online orientation session as a pre- or co-requisite. This occurs during your first year of mentoring only, but must be completed by all mentors beginning in Fall 2008.

Mentor/Inductee Evening Sessions

With the exception of Introduction to Induction Sessions and Year 3 Presentations, mentors and inductees may complete their face-to-face session requirements by attending a session at IU1 Central Office or by meeting offsite at any alternate site. IU1 Central Office sessions include dinner and content is determined by each inductee and mentor.

Mentor/Inductee Offsite Options

Mentors who select the mentor/inductee offsite option can meet offsite and document their mentor/inductee session by posting resources on the inductees and mentors wiki. The mentors/inductees should join the wiki and create their own pages. Each page should include the names of the mentor and inductee in the title and at the top of the page. Information saved on each page must include the dates and activities for each session along with resources shared, developed, and or reviewed. Other wikispaces, websites, and printed materials can be shared, but they must be noted on the mentor/inductee's page. On the inductees and mentors wiki, instruction is provided and a sample wikipage is also available. Mentors and inductees will select “New Page” to create their pages.

Mentors and inductees must sign up for the Mentor/Inductee sessions that are titled “IU1 Staff Independent Mentor/Inductee Sessions” on Solutionwhere. The dates for these sessions will be the same as the dates for the sessions held at IU1. Year 1 mentors and inductees may sign up for one offsite session, Year 2 mentors and inductees may sign up for two independent sessions, and Year 3 mentors and inductees may sign up for one independent session. If mentors and inductees are attending two independent sessions, they must sign up for two separate sessions in Solutionwhere so that both sessions can be marked attended and will show on transcripts. The actual dates of the offsite sessions must be recorded on the mentor and inductee checklists beside the IU meeting dates.
