Medical Benefits Coverage

Intermediate Unit 1 employees may choose between a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and a traditional Indemnity medial benefit to cover their and their family medical needs. Both our active and retired eligible employees enjoy the benefit of maximum health protection regardless of their place of residence. Eligible employees enjoy low co-payments for office visits, prescription drugs and emergency room visits. The program is administered through Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. The specific benefit arrangements are detailed in collective bargaining agreements or board policy. Prescription Drug Plan Coverage

A prescription drug benefit coverage program is offered in conjunction the medical benefits for each eligible employee and their families' medical benefit coverage. Seniors retired from Intermediate Unit 1 can rest assured that our prescription drug program meets Medicare Part D credible coverage. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield administers our program. Employees interested in additional cost savings or convenience can have their prescriptions filled and delivered through mail order service. Dental Benefits

Intermediate Unit 1 offers an extensive dental coverage program for eligible employees who use participating dentists. Our dental coverage is offered through United Concordia. Employees and their families can access such services such as x-rays, cleanings, simple extractions and surgical periodontics and many other services under this benefit to ensure good dental health for themselves and their families. Furthermore, the Intermediate Unit 1 pays for 100% of the premiums for you and your family. Vision Benefits

Intermediate Unit 1 offers great vision benefits through Davis Vision Company. Eligible employees and their families will receive professional eye examinations and prescriptive glasses from an extensive Fashion Excellence product line. Eligible employees can also upgrade to the Fashion Excellence Gold program, for even greater benefits. Income Protection

Income protection disability insurance is a valuable benefit that provides an employee with income should they become unable to work as a result of work or non-work related injury. The Intermediate Unit 1 Income Protection program is administered through Unum insurance company. If this benefit includes long term income protection, the employee automatically receives Unum's Travel Assistance Program protection. Life Insurance

The Intermediate Unit provides life insurance to full and part time regular eligible employees according the master policy during their employment with Intermediate Unit 1. Assurant Employee Benefits is the carrier for Intermediate Unit 1 employees. This benefit has many important features to protect you and your beneficiary including a waiver of premium to continue your benefit should you become disabled from employment, an accidental death and dismemberment rider, an Automobile Accident Benefit, a Higher Education Benefit, and the options to convert or your insurance without an evidence of insurability. Employee Assistance Program

A workplace benefit for all IU1 full-time employees and eligible family members, Washington EAP Services provides professional counselors for issues such as marital/relationship, family/parenting, grief/loss, alcohol/drug abuse, work related problems, stress, anxiety, gambling, and depression. There is no cost to employees or eligible family members for up to three EAP sessions per issue.

State and federal guidelines protect the privacy of employees and family members who receive EAP services.

Long Term Care

Intermediate Unit 1 offers Long Term Care Protection Insurance for employees to purchase at group rates. With the rising cost of skill nursing and assisted living, employees should consider this benefit. This insurance product is for the employee and their immediate or extended family members. If our employee considers enrollment upon hire, Unum guarantees coverage. Contact the Human Resources Department for questions regarding your eligibility for this benefit.

Travel Assistance Program

As part of an employee long-term disability Income Protection Insurance program, Unum offers a 24-hour worldwide Travel Assistance Program for business or pleasure. The program is offered under Assist America. The program covers employees and their family worldwide for dozens of emergency services including matters of locating a physician in a foreign county, credit card replacement for lost of stolen cards, emergency translators, medical necessary return to home of a family member. You can't leave home without this valuable benefit. Contact the Human Resources Department for questions regarding your eligibility for this benefit.

Section 125 Cafeteria Plan

Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Code permits qualified benefit plans to be paid by employee before tax dollars only if your employer offers such a program and carefully complies with the IRS Code rules. Intermediate Unit 1 does offer these benefits to certain employee groups. Some benefits that are permissible to be paid on a pre-tax basis include: health care benefit premiums, life insurance premiums, cancer insurance and other catastrophic insurance premiums, income protection premium, medical expenses and dependent care expenses. Intermediate Unit 1 offers this benefit in through Employee Benefits Data Services (EBDS) of Pittsburgh. EBDS is a leader in offering Section 125 benefits to organizations and companies throughout the United States.

Premium Only Plans

This benefit allows eligible employees who pay health care premiums to do so on a pre-tax basis.

Flexible Spending Account

Out of pocket expenses and medical co-payment not covered by any form of insurance (e.g. medical, dental, vision) can be paid with pre-tax dollars through the Intermediate Unit 1 Flexible Spending Account benefit. Examples could include: co-payments for prescriptions drugs, routine physicals, dental fees, orthodontics expenses, eye glasses, eye exams and contact lenses, as well as a wide range of other expenses.

Dependent Care

Out of pocket expenses for qualifying dependent care can also be paid for on a pre-tax basis through the Intermediate Unit 1 Dependent Care benefit. These expenses qualify if they are necessary to enable the employee and their spouse to work or attend school.

Catastrophic Insurances

Cancer/Heart and Stroke Insurances

This catastrophic insurance uses incentives to encourage employees to utilize services for the prevention of various cancers and cardiovascular diseases. Intermediate Unit 1 offers this benefit through Aflac Insurance Company. Retirement Benefits

All Intermediate Unit 1 employees participate as members of the Public School Employees' Retirement System (PSERS) according to the provisions of the School Laws of Pennsylvania. Contact the Human Resources Department for information about this defined pension benefit.

Tax Sheltered 403(b) Annuity Providers

Intermediate Unit 1 offers all employees the option to invest money for their pension through a Tax Sheltered 403(b) Annuity benefit. The IU1 will make these investments, with pre-tax dollars directly through payroll deductions.
