First Annual Calcu-Solv Math Competition Held

On May 18 and May 23, 2012, Intermediate Unit 1 held its first annual Calcu-Solv Math Competition. This is the result of a partnership with Duquesne University and Intermediate Unit 1, which was funded by II-VI Foundation. The event was held at Natali building on the California University of Pennsylvania campus.

There were a total of 96 elementary students and 76 middle school students from 12 different districts throughout Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties, who competed in the competition. The participating school districts included:

The competition consisted of a total of 10 questions — eight individual and two group questions.

The initial opportunity to answer the individual questions consisted of a five-minute time period. After the five-minute session, a student may turn in their solution. A student who did not submit an answer after the first five minutes was then read a clue and had a second opportunity to submit an answer.

The event lasted approximately three hours. The students were provided a snack half way through the event and a lunch.

After lunch, group and individual winners were announced and each received a trophy for their accomplishments.

Thanks to the many individuals who assisted in making this event become a huge sucess, and congratulations to the exceptional young mathematicians!
